»Abstract This volume provides a first systematic analysis of the changes in within-country income inequality over the last twenty years on the basis of an extensive review of the relevant literature and of an econometric analysis of trends in inequality indexes. The study shows that inequality worsened in seventy percent of the 73 developed, developing and transitional countries analysed.
The volume provides also an evaluation of the possible causes of this widespread – if not universal – rise in income inequality, be they those (North-South trade, migration or technological change) frequently referred to in the current literature, or those traditionally explaining high inequality in a developing context (high land concentration, unequal access to education, the urban bias of public policy and the ‘curse of natural resources’), or – central to the message of this book - the policy reforms towards liberalisation and globalisation implemented in a large number of countries over the last two decades. In this regard, the volume offers a first empirical assessment of the relation between policies towards liberalisation and globalisation and income inequality.
